It’s first and foremost Pierre Paul Riquet’s Canal du Midi and its various curiosities, many of which are close to Bize Minervois such as the 9 locks of Fonseranne in Béziers, the tunnel of the Malpas to Nissan the Enserunes pierced in the rock to cross a hill, the canal bridge of Sallèles d’Aude whose 3 arches span the Cesse.
But it is also Narbonne, classified among the Great Sites of Occitanie, ancient Roman capital that is well worth a visit! Narbo Via, an international museum of romance, will be founded in 2020. At the heart of its Baltard-style halls, which are ranked the most beautiful halles in the Occitanie region and the 5th most beautiful market in France, conviviality reigns supreme. Its merchants’ bridge over the Robine Canal is the only bridge built in France on a canal. The Archbishops’ Palace, the Gothic cloister and St. Just’s Cathedral are now witnesses to a very long history.
Finally, it’s the City of Carcassonne which is the largest and best preserved castle in Europe. Splendid site that gives a 360 degree panorama over the whole department.
The former area occupied by the Cathars stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the Black Mountain mainly on the department of Aude but also of Ariège and Tarn.
A visit to the remains of these citadels of vertigo is worth it: the climb is rough as were the Cathars. The castles are numerous and all within a radius of less than 100 kilometers from the Flower Camping de l’Olivigne. We’ll remember Minerve, Lastours.
The Cathar country is also Carcassonne and its emblematic city, the best preserved and the largest in Europe. These are also the many fortifications such as Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Lastours, Minerva, Villerouges-Termenès, Aguilar, Montsegur, etc. They are also the abbeys: that of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse, in this other village classified among the most beautiful in France, the beautifully preserved abbey of Fontfroide, classified as grand Site of Occitanie, or that of Saint-Hilaire.
The Cathar Country is a label filed in 1991 by the general council bringing together artisans, winemakers, farmers, tourism providers meeting a rigorous specifications where the emphasis is on authenticity and quality.
The maritime front of the Narbonnaise Regional Natural Park is one of the few protected natural sites. It stretches for 42 kilometres where the lido creates a string of ponds and lagoons on which are small nautical bases, marshes and salt.
Throughout the year, on foot or by bicycle, you can discover on the nature reserve of St. Lucia, different species of migratory birds as well as Mediterranean-type vegetation. The nearest spot to Bize not to be missed is Gruissan: its mythical beach of the chalets where the film “37-2 in the morning” was shot with Béatrice Dalles, its picturesque fishing village in circulade where, every Sunday morning, you can stroll through the alleys of its market , and especially its pink salts where you can feast on seafood after the guided visit, or even drink in the cocktail bar of Pierre Richard, whose panoramic view of the saline is breathtaking.
Created in 1666 by Pierre-Paul Riquet, the Canal du Midi is now an emblematic tourist destination of France, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Its sections and numerous works are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Somail is one of the most mythical resorts in the canal and is located geographically opposite the Flower Camping Olivigne in Aude just 7 kilometers away. It is easy to get there by bike by meandering along the paths of sleepers between vines and olive trees thanks to the route we have designed for our customers. The Somail is also the possibility to go on boat trips, to eat, to visit the bookstore of old books, to walk to the rhythm of boaters. If you push just further on the commune of Sallèles d’Aude you can admire the canal bridge with three arches that allows you to pass the Cesse under the canal as well as its many locks towards the junction canal towards the Robine Canal. Walking upstream of the Canal, we reach the beautiful village of Ventenac-en-Minervois with its huge canal-side wine cellar, then head to the charming villages of Paraza, Roubia, Argens-Minervois to reach the port of Homps. This area is a beautiful place where the villages of Minervois are added to the canal.
